Cuckoo's Nest Movie Review
We have now taken our exam about the novel. This week we are watching the film version. Made in 1985, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was directed by Milos Forman. It won 5 Academy Awards!
As we watch you should think about:
- What is particularly good about the movie (acting, costumes, dialogue, setting, music)?
- What are the weaknesses?
- What is different from the book? Is it a faithful adaptation?
HERE is the assignment you will complete after viewing the movie. You are writing a movie review! We will talk more about this after the movie.

Rorschach Test
Rorschach tests (ink-blot tests) were popular in the early 20th Century as a tool for diagnosing mental disorders.
Here is an online version for those of you who are interested. This is totally optional, but I thought it was interesting.
Take results with a grain of salt!
As the site notes, "[research] indicates that scores from the MCR have little value." These sorts of tests are no longer used to determine mental status or illness. That's a big relief to me as my results are consistent with psychological disturbance. Yikes! If anyone scores "normal," I want to know!!
I think it is interesting to think about the many bogus ways researchers in the past attempted to categorize and ostracize people based on perceived mental differences. Remember our chorus, "Conform or be cast out."
How many of our characters from Cuckoo's Nest might have been subjected to similar tests?!?

Today we did a listening activity with This American Life's January 31, 1997 broadcast of "The Edge of Sanity." We listened to Part II & IV and answered THESE questions.
If you missed class, please plan to listen to those parts of the show and answer the questions in your own time.
Those of you interested in listening to more of the show may do so, though I do warn you that other segments are somewhat disturbing, so proceed with caution.

"Have you ever had a teacher, parent or coach that told you something you knew was wrong? Have any of those people told you to DO something you knew was wrong. What did you do? Do you think you are a person who can stand up against power?"
Then, we watched the following two videos and discussed the nature of conformity and power:

In-Class Listening from 2/27
Today we listened to two really powerful StoryCorp stories from veterans.
The first was from Captain Drew Pham, speaking with his wife Amy about his deployment to Afghanistan in 2011.
The second was from Michael Crowe. In this short clip he describes looking at photos of soldiers from Vietnam.
For each of these stories I asked
We also watched this beautiful StoryCorp animated video called "The Nature of War:"

Essay Revision Materials
This week we are continuing our work on essays. You are all at different places in the revision process. Some of you need to "get back to basics" and begin again (don't fret, we've all been there!). Others need to reorganize what you have and find new or better pieces of evidence. Some have just minor grammatical issues to correct. My goal is that all of you improve your writing with this essay so everyone must turn in a revision.

You all received an extension on the "God Bless America" & discrimination in the military paper. It is now also, DUE TOMORROW (FRIDAY):
- Read the short story "God Bless America"
- Read THIS article about discrimination in the military
- Respond to the prompt below
In a well-written 1-page response, answer the following:
President Truman desegregated the military in 1948 by
executive action, but in “God Bless America,” Joe serves in a segregated unit
headed for Korea (around 1951). Clearly, the military was slow to end
discriminatory practices. What evidence do you see in both the short story and
the article that confirm this? Use direct quotations in your discussion. Why,
do you think, did minorities continue to serve?

America by Tony Hoagland
Welcome to the second semester of American Lit! I was glad to meet you today. Here is the poem "America" by Tony Hoagland we discussed in class.
BY TONY HOAGLAND
America
Then one of the students with blue hair and a tongue stud
Says that America is for him a maximum-security prison
Whose walls are made of RadioShacks and Burger Kings, and MTV episodes
Where you can’t tell the show from the commercials,
And as I consider how to express how full of shit I think he is,
He says that even when he’s driving to the mall in his Isuzu
Trooper with a gang of his friends, letting rap music pour over them
Like a boiling Jacuzzi full of ballpeen hammers, even then he feels
Buried alive, captured and suffocated in the folds
Of the thick satin quilt of America
And I wonder if this is a legitimate category of pain,
or whether he is just spin doctoring a better grade,
And then I remember that when I stabbed my father in the dream last night,
It was not blood but money
That gushed out of him, bright green hundred-dollar bills
Spilling from his wounds, and—this is the weird part—,
He gasped “Thank god—those Ben Franklins were
Clogging up my heart—
And so I perish happily,
Freed from that which kept me from my liberty”—
Which was when I knew it was a dream, since my dad
Would never speak in rhymed couplets,
And I look at the student with his acne and cell phone and phony ghetto clothes
And I think, “I am asleep in America too,
And I don’t know how to wake myself either,”
And I remember what Marx said near the end of his life:
“I was listening to the cries of the past,
When I should have been listening to the cries of the future.”
But how could he have imagined 100 channels of 24-hour cable
Or what kind of nightmare it might be
When each day you watch rivers of bright merchandise run past you
And you are floating in your pleasure boat upon this river
Even while others are drowning underneath you
And you see their faces twisting in the surface of the waters
And yet it seems to be your own hand
Which turns the volume higher?

Homework Due Thursday (January 29)
- Bring your ID's for the Book Depository
